Exploring Southall's South Asian community & their relationship to film

Southall On Film was a year long Heritage Lottery (Young Roots) funded project that saw over 100 young people participate. Make A Difference Entertainment (MADE) partnered with BFI Future Film and the Ealing Local History centre to host a range of engaging activities. My contribution came through writing, directing and judging short films as well as working on the documentary.

Southall as known as Little Panjab, is the largest Panjabi community outside of India. Participants discovered the impact immigration of the South Asian community had on the West London town and explored the community's consumption of film from 1960s to 1990s. The history of Southall cinemas and VHS stores was uncovered through archive research, oral histories with cinema-goer residents, insight sessions and interviews with film professionals. The research informed and shaped the production of a film set where a series of short films and a documentary about the project were filmed at BFI Southbank.
